May 26, 2026EMERGE Enters Its Final Implementation Phase: From Tools to Impact Across Africa
As the EMERGE project enters its final implementation phase, the consortium is moving from development and design activities toward validation, stakeholder engagement, and real-world application of its solutions across African pilot regions.
Over the past months, partners from Europe and Africa have worked together to build an integrated ecosystem combining energy modelling tools, knowledge resources, data platforms, and collaborative methodologies designed to support sustainable energy development. Today, the project is entering a new stage, transforming these results into practical actions capable of supporting decision-making and creating long-term impact.
A key milestone in this phase is the completion of the EMERGE Toolbox, whose final version will be delivered at the end of June. The Toolbox brings together a suite of advanced tools designed to support modelling, planning, and optimisation of African energy systems while considering environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
Several important developments have already been achieved:
- CEPIA (Climate and Energy Policies Impact Assessment Tool), developed by Artelys, has been standardised and adapted to African ecosystems, enabling long-term energy and climate scenario simulations up to 2055. Initial results have already been generated for Morocco, Nigeria, and Mozambique.
- The Hosting Capacity Tool, developed by CIRCE, has evolved from a static planning tool into a dynamic decision-support system incorporating contingency analysis, resilience assessment, and KPI-based evaluation, including losses, voltage performance, system costs, and emissions. Validated using network models from Morocco and Mozambique, it is currently being adapted for the Niger/Mali region to enhance grid stability and integration of renewables.
- The Optimal Storage Placement Tool, also developed by CIRCE, now integrates environmental and economic indicators and is connected to the EMERGE Knowledge Base. This enables comprehensive assessment of battery energy storage deployment scenarios by comparing technical, financial, and environmental trade-offs within a single framework. Furthermore, a dedicated scientific publication detailing this methodology is currently being managed and can be found here: https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202605.0797; this paper presents the initial results associated with Mali, while results for the remaining demonstrators will be generated subsequently.
- PowSyBl-METRIX, developed by Artelys, now includes a dedicated Python interface to improve accessibility and integration with the broader EMERGE Toolbox. Initial demonstrations on the Mozambique model have shown significant reductions in redispatching costs and renewable energy curtailment through optimised battery dispatch strategies.
- GREENADVISE, developed by UNIZAG FSB, has been enhanced to support both deterministic and stochastic optimisation approaches, providing greater flexibility for planning and decision-making under uncertainty.
Importantly, all tools have now been validated across the three African pilot regions, representing a major step toward their practical application and long-term exploitation.
At the same time, EMERGE continues strengthening one of its core principles: meaningful stakeholder engagement. Through Policy Labs, co-design workshops, and collaborative activities involving policymakers, researchers, innovators, and local communities, the project aims to ensure that developed solutions reflect local priorities and respond to real-world needs.
The coming months will also bring new opportunities for collaboration and innovation across pilot regions. A series of local mini-hackathons and engagement activities will encourage participants to develop ideas and practical solutions tailored to regional challenges while promoting cross-country knowledge exchange.
Alongside these activities, project partners are continuing work on clean energy transition roadmaps and policy recommendations designed to support long-term sustainable development pathways across Africa.
As EMERGE moves toward its concluding stage, the project continues demonstrating the value of collaboration between Europe and Africa in developing practical solutions that contribute to a greener and more inclusive future.
