PowSyBl-METRIX

PowSyBl is an open-source framework currently used by European TSOs for electrical grid modelling and simulation (transmission network investment planning, network security analysis following incidents, merging of individual network models, sensitivity analysis, time domain simulation).

Part of the overall software is the METRIX framework which is dedicated to power network flows calculations with an hourly timestep resolution. Starting from network topology and historical generation / load data, it allows user to compute the distribution of power flows within electrical system components ('base case' analyses) and enables optimization tasks to be performed to support secure operation in the event of outages (‘optimal power flow’ analyses).

Within the scope of EMERGE project, METRIX will be used as an advanced electrical analysis module to support system planning on the studied electrical grids, especially for the integration of renewable energy systems. To this end, a specific Python package aimed at complementing the Hosting Capacity Tool (also described in this page) has been developed by Artelys. Starting from an initial hosting capacity assessment, this tailored tool allows to study the ability of innovative electrical grid management techniques (e.g. Battery Energy Storage Systems, curative curtailments, Dynamic Line Rating, etc.) to provide additional capacity for further integration of renewables in the grid.
