On 27 November 2024, the EMERGE project hosted the “Empowering Green Energy Development in Africa: Tools Optimization & Policy Workshop” at Université Mohammed Premier (UMP) in Oujda, Morocco. This hybrid event brought together policymakers, academics, business leaders, and civil society to collaborate on advancing Africa’s clean energy transition.

Workshop Overview

The workshop commenced with a welcome address and an overview of the co-design approach, highlighting the EMERGE project’s objectives and focus areas. Participants engaged in interactive sessions featuring three primary tools:

1. CEPIA: Presented by Artelys, this tool evaluates clean energy production and integration possibilities.
2. Hosting Capacity: Introduced by CIRCE, it focuses on maximizing grid hosting capacity for renewable energy sources.
3. GREENADVISE: Demonstrated by UNIZAG FSB, offering strategic guidance for sustainable energy initiatives.

Each session included scenario-building exercises, allowing attendees to explore and provide feedback on the tools’ applicability to Africa’s unique energy landscape.

Knowledge Exchange Session

A panel discussion, moderated by AfriLabs, addressed policy barriers, best practices, and actionable recommendations specific to the African context, with a special emphasis on Morocco. This session facilitated an exchange of ideas and solutions to policy challenges in energy development.

Conclusion

This workshop marked a significant step toward enhancing green energy initiatives in Africa by optimizing tools and policies that address regional needs and resource management challenges. Participants gained insights into practical, cutting-edge solutions designed to meet Africa’s clean energy objectives.
