On 27 November 2024, the EMERGE project will host the Empowering Green Energy Development in Africa: Tools Optimization & Policy Workshop in Oujda, Morocco, with options for both in-person and virtual participation. The event, held at Campus Du Savoir, Ahl Angad, Oujda, will bring together policymakers, academia, business leaders, and civil society to collaborate on advancing Africa’s clean energy transition. Attendees will engage in hands-on sessions, panel discussions, and interactive activities designed to co-create and refine innovative tools for sustainable energy development.

The EMERGE – ENERGY SYSTEM MODELLING FOR GREEN DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA project is dedicated to empowering African policymakers, academics, investors, and communities with the tools and knowledge essential for increasing clean energy production and sustainable resource management. This project builds on existing methodologies to develop a Toolbox that optimizes resource use while considering social, climatic, economic, and technical factors. Focusing on three key African regions—North Western Africa (Morocco), the Niger River region (Mali/Nigeria), and Mozambique—the project aims to bridge cultural and socioeconomic divides and foster knowledge-sharing communities.

Workshop Description

The Empowering Green Energy Development in Africa: Tools Optimization & Policy Workshop invites a diverse group of stakeholders to collaboratively co-design the EMERGE tools tailored to Africa’s unique energy landscape. Through interactive scenario-building exercises and hands-on sessions, participants will explore and provide feedback on three primary tools:

• CEPIA: A tool designed to evaluate clean energy production and integration possibilities.
• Hosting Capacity: Focuses on maximizing grid hosting capacity for renewable energy sources.
• GREENADVISE: Offers strategic guidance for sustainable energy initiatives.

The workshop also includes a panel discussion focused on policy barriers, best practices, and actionable recommendations specific to the African context, with a special emphasis on Morocco. This discussion will serve as a platform for participants to exchange ideas and propose solutions to policy challenges in energy development.
