Brussels & online | 17 October 2025 – The EMERGE project participated in the European Climate and Energy Modelling Platform 2025 (ECEMP) conference, held in Brussels and online 16 – 17 October 2025. This year’s edition focused on “European Energy Transition and Society: Moving Towards Implementation.”

The EMERGE special session was scheduled on Friday, 17 October, under the theme “Developing Clean and Affordable Transport – African Perspectives and Advancements.” EMERGE was represented by Université Mohammed Premier (UMP), with Mr. Mourad Karmoum presenting “Study of the impact of integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into urban electricity grids: a case study of the city of Oujda, Morocco.”

This session was jointly organised by the three Horizon Europe sister projects working on AU–EU energy systems modelling, EMERGE, OpenMod4Africa, and REINTEGRATE, and aimed to bring to ECEMP African perspectives and experiences of clean transitions at national and local levels, with a focus on sustainable transport.

Discussions addressed policy priorities such as Ethiopia’s recent ban on the import of fossil fuel vehicles and Morocco’s 0% VAT and reduced custom duties for importing fully electric vehicles. The session also presented supporting evidence on potential transition pathways by AU and EU teams in the three organising projects.

The projects jointly advocate for knowledge sharing between the African Union and the European Union as a way to expand the knowledge base on both sides, leapfrog innovation and clean, just transitions, and strengthen mutual understanding of reciprocal priorities, laying the groundwork for new partnerships in science and policy.
