The EMERGE project took part in the LEAP-RE Annual Event 2025, contributing to the Clustering Session on Grid Modelling held on 22 October. Represented by Francesco Roncallo, EnGreen, EMERGE showcased its work on developing context-appropriate energy system models to support Africa’s clean energy transition.

During the session, researchers from Africa and Europe examined key challenges in energy planning—from rural electrification to national-level strategies—and exchanged approaches for improving modelling tools and data collection. EMERGE highlighted its multi-scale modelling framework and its co-design approach, which engages local partners in shaping data needs, scenarios, and policy-relevant insights.

As part of the Grid Modelling cluster, EMERGE joined sister projects including OpenMod4Africa, RE-INTEGRATE, EPIC Africa, ENERGICA, ONEPlanET, and PRIMA, reinforcing collaboration across the LEAP-RE community. The discussion underlined the importance of open, transparent modelling tools and shared data resources for accelerating renewable energy deployment across the continent.

The session formed part of a wider programme that brought together the Africa–Europe research community for three days of project showcases, high-level discussions, and capacity-building activities. By joining the Clustering Session, EMERGE reinforced its role within the Africa–Europe research community, contributing to discussions on system modelling and its relevance for sustainable energy development across African contexts.
